A Day In Williamstown

As I stepped off the Williamstown Ferry from Melbourne onto the wooden planks of Gem Pier, I felt a sense of tranquillity wash over me. The bustling city I had come to call home felt like a distant memory as I gazed out at the sailboats bobbing gently in the harbor. Accompanied by two close friends, we made our way into the heart of Williamstown, passing by a lively visitor hub and a vibrant dock lined with boats of all shapes and sizes. As we strolled along, the quaint cafes and charming shops we had been seeking came into view, beckoning us in with their warm, welcoming embrace.

Living in the Melbourne CBD had been a whirlwind experience for me – a world of new opportunities and exciting adventures, but one that occasionally left me feeling homesick and yearning for a simpler way of life. It was then that I realized that what I needed was a break from the fast-paced city and a chance to recharge my batteries in a more serene setting.

A short hour-long boat ride from the city, Williamstown was the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of Melbourne. As we sailed past the city’s iconic landmarks, and the bustling shipping port, the captain regaled us with fascinating stories and jokes, making the journey all the more enjoyable.

When we finally arrived in Williamstown’s popular commercial district, the aroma of fresh-brewed coffee and the promise of delicious food beckoned us to a cosy Italian cafe. Sitting outside, we savoured our lattes and light breakfast as we watched the boats come and go in the harbour. Life felt unhurried and contented, and we knew we had made the right choice in coming here.

After breakfast, we set out on foot to explore the nearby beach, a 20-minute walk through charming residential neighbourhoods and past the beautiful Williamstown Botanic Gardens. Arriving at the beach just before noon, we found a peaceful enclave filled with joggers, sunbathers, and swimmers braving the chilly water. We spent a leisurely few hours basking in the sun, enjoying the calming sound of the waves and the occasional cloud that offered us some respite from the intense sun.

As the day began to draw to a close, we made our way back to Gem Pier, stopping for a delicious scoop of gelato from a charming shop we had passed on our way. Sitting on the pier’s edge, we savoured our sweet treats as we watched the sun begin to set over the water. Feeling rejuvenated and at peace, we boarded the ferry, contented and ready to take on whatever the week had in store for us.

As we cruised back into the city, I gazed out at the glittering skyline, feeling a renewed sense of appreciation for Melbourne and all it had to offer. But, more importantly, I felt grateful for the small-town charm and tranquil pace of life that I had found in Williamstown, just an hour away.

If you’re ever in need of a break from the hustle and bustle of city life, I highly recommend stepping aboard the Melbourne River Cruises Ferry and exploring the idyllic town of Williamstown. It’s a world away from the city, yet just a short boat ride away.
