Visiting Our Region

Old. New. Urban. Rural. Established. Contemporary. Call it a region of contrasts or a journey of juxtapositions – or just call it the West.

Melbourne’s west is changing rapidly. Home to tens of thousands of passionate new residents every year – a new prep class is born weekly in Wyndham alone – the west is Melbourne’s most dynamic locale.

Unparalleled cultural diversity is bringing new tastes to every neighbourhood. Feel like South American food? No problem. Vietnamese? Too easy. Nepalese? Tick. Jamaican, Japanese, Indochindese? Yep, yep, yep. Some of Melbourne’s most respected food bloggers don’t even leave the west – there’s no need.

A drive on the western waterfront is a must – from the old-world charm of Williamstown to the thoroughly modern Wyndham Harbour, you’ll have stunning views of the city the whole way.
Have a glass of vino at one of the wineries just a short drive from the city; match it with some local produce and you’ll never want to leave.

Every suburb has its own unique charm, often with a grit and earthiness that binds the region to its working-class roots. Footscray, home of the mighty Western Bulldogs, is also home to art galleries, bars, restaurants and an increasing number of young families. Fast-growing Melton Shire is winning praise for its community-building efforts, earning a Unesco Learning Cities Award in October 2015. Moonee Ponds and Ascot Vale offer some of the best cafe strips in Melbourne, while Yarraville and Seddon offer village shopping at its best.

If you want to leave the hustle and bustle behind, point your nose toward K Road and take a walk around the K Road Cliffs and Werribee River, or visit Point Cook Coastal Park, one of the world’s most important stops for migratory birds.

You can’t fail to be surprised in the west. Choose your own adventure – then choose another one. And another. Get the idea?
